Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale: The Lady with the Lamp

Reading Passage:

Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy. She was a pioneer in nursing and is remembered for her revolutionary work during the Crimean War. Nightingale came from a wealthy family, but she felt a strong calling to help others, particularly in healthcare.

In 1854, she went to Crimea with a group of nurses to care for soldiers. At that time, hospitals were dirty and overcrowded, leading to high death rates from infections and diseases. Nightingale worked tirelessly to improve the sanitary conditions and introduced better hygiene practices and organization in the hospitals.

Her commitment and passion earned her the nickname "The Lady with the Lamp" because she would walk among the sick at night with a lamp in her hand. Her efforts significantly reduced the death rate among soldiers.

After returning to Britain, Nightingale continued to advocate for healthcare reforms. She established the Nightingale Training School for Nurses in 1860 at St. Thomas' Hospital in London, laying the foundation for modern nursing education. Florence Nightingale’s work has inspired generations of nurses and changed healthcare across the world.
