Brain Teasers

The River Crossing

A farmer needs to cross a river with a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage. He has a boat but can only take one item at a time. If he leaves the wolf alone with the goat, the wolf will eat the goat. If he leaves the goat alone with the cabbage, the goat will eat the cabbage. How can the farmer get all three across the river safely?

The River Crossing

Answer

   1. The farmer takes the goat across the river first and leaves it on the other side.

   2. He goes back and takes the wolf across the river.

   3. He leaves the wolf on the other side but takes the goat back with him to the original side.

   4. He leaves the goat on the original side and takes the cabbage across the river.

   5. Finally, he goes back one last time to get the goat and brings it across the river.

The Missing Dollar

Three friends go to a restaurant and agree to split a $30 bill. They each contribute $10. The waiter tells them that there was a special promotion and that the bill is only $25. He gives them $5 back, and they decide to keep $1 each and give a $2 tip. Now, they each spent $9, totaling $27. If the waiter has $2, that makes $29. Where is the missing dollar?

Answer

There is no missing dollar. The friends originally spent $30. After the waiter returns $5, they spend $27 total ($25 for the bill and $2 for the tip). The statement about the $29 is misleading. The total should be accounted for as the $27 spent plus the $3 they kept, which equals the original $30.
