Prefer, would prefer, would rather

A) Prefer doing / prefer to do

Prefer means to like something better than something else. We use "prefer doing" or "prefer to do" to talk about our preferences in general

I prefer reading a book to watching TV.

I prefer to read a book rather than watch TV.

She prefers driving to work to taking the bus.

She prefers to drive to work rather than take the bus.

They prefer cooking at home to eating out in restaurants.

They prefer to cook at home rather than eat out in restaurants.

B) would prefer to do

We use "would prefer to do" to say what we choose to do something now or in the future

- Let's go out and have a walk in the park.

- No, I feel tired. I'd prefer to stay home and have a rest.

The museum is a long way away from here. I'd prefer to take a taxi rather than walk

I'd prefer to go for a walk by the seaside rather than wait here.

C) Would rather do = would prefer to do

- Shall we study together tonight?

- Well, I'd prefer to study alone. Or I'd rather study alone.

I'd rather go sightseeing than go swimming today.

I'd rather not answer your question. It's too personal.

Would you rather sell your old text books rather than give them away for free?

D) would rather you did something

We want someone else to do something. Although we use the past simple, meaning is present or future.

I'd rather you smoked outside. (I don't want you to smoke here in the house. Please, go out.)

I'd rather you didn't go out in this cold weather.

I'd rather you paid for your lunch yourself.

Study this dialogue

**Sam:** Hey, Taylor! Are you planning to do anything special this weekend?

**Taylor:** Hi Sam! I was thinking about going to the art exhibit downtown. I prefer visiting galleries over staying home all day. What about you?

**Sam:** I’d rather spend the day outside, honestly. If I had to choose, I’d prefer hiking in the hills.

**Taylor:** That sounds nice too. Fresh air and exercise can be so refreshing. But I would rather immerse myself in art sometimes. It’s inspiring.

**Sam:** I get that. I guess it’s all about what you’re in the mood for. Would you be up for a hike next weekend?

**Taylor:** Sure, I’d prefer doing it then since this weekend is packed. It could be a nice change of pace!

**Sam:** Great! I’ll start planning for next weekend. I’d rather prepare and make it fun.

**Taylor:** Awesome! Let’s chat more about the details soon.
